CHAPTER 17

Still numb from the assignment, Paige allowed herself to be led into the pub. She plopped into a booth as Dewey slid across from her.

A buxom waitress bustled over, receiving cat calls from some of the soldiers. She grinned at them before she delivered a paper menu to each of them. “Willkommen.”

“Hi,” Dewey said with a grin, “do you speak English?”

“Yes,” she answered with a nod. “I will leave you to browse the menu.”

She wandered away, and Dewey snatched his from the table. “Oh, boy. I wonder what’s good here?”

Paige stared at the marred wooden table in front of her, tracing the outline of a gouge with her fingernail.

“What’ll you have, Paige?” Dewey asked.

“Huh?”

“Hello, Earth to Paige. What are you going to eat? Why are you staring into space like that?”

“Umm, I’m nervous. I have to woo a Nazi officer into giving me this scepter, then knock him out with it, and run.”

“Yeah, maybe don’t say that too loud in a tavern full of German soldiers,” Dewey said with a sideways glance at the other patrons.

Paige sank her head into her hands again. “This is insane.”

“It’ll be fine. Bratwurst looks good.”

“You and your stomach. I can’t even think of eating with this hanging over me.”

“You probably should. It’ll give you more energy to swing that scepter.”

Paige clicked her tongue at the reasoning and shook her head.

“Are you ready?” the waitress asked as she returned.

Dewey glanced at Paige before he nodded. “Yeah, we’ll both have the bratwurst and sauerkraut. And two ales, thanks.”

She jotted down the order and nodded before she collected the menus, spun on a heel, and strode away.

“The last thing I need is an ale.”

“I think the first thing you need is an ale. Loosen up a little.”

Paige tightened her jaw, speaking through clenched teeth as she curled her fingers into a fist. “Loosen up? Are you kidding?”

“I’m not. Look, you already have the date. All you have to do is woo him a little.”

“Do I look capable of wooing?”

“Well, now that you’ve lost the glasses, yeah. Also, you’ve had multiple marriage proposals in a matter of weeks, so this really should be boosting your confidence somewhat.”

Paige crinkled her brow. Why had she received two proposals in a matter of weeks? That was odd.

“Look, the guy already thinks you’re pretty, obviously. Just flutter your eyelashes a little bit and act like he’s really important. Give him a few demure looks.”

Paige nodded as he spoke. She could probably flutter her eyelashes. It seemed to work for other women.

“Then, run your hand up his lapel and press yourself against him. Whisper in his ear you’d like to see his scepter.”

“Ew, that sounds gross. Also, I’m concerned I’ll see the wrong scepter.”

“Oh, good point, okay, wait. How about something like…I don’t want to get you in trouble or anything, but I wondered if I could just see the scepter once before I meet with Herr Himmler. I understand if you can’t do it, but I’d really appreciate it if you could.
